A BRIEF HISTORY OF NEW QUAY CAMERA CLUB
A small group of people met in a local café in the New Quay Hotel to learn more about Photoshop led by Geoffrey Barham and Margaret Jones. After a few meetings Geoffrey left the area so Margaret, who always wanted to have a camera club in New Quay, decided to start one in the Yacht Club.
After meeting for nearly a year a committee was formed and the first committee meeting was held in June 2003. The Camera Club met once a month. Many of the original members moved out of the area, new members joined and the enthusiasm and interest has grown.
We now meet on the first and third Thursday of each month at 7.00pm in the Memorial Hall New Quay and more often when required.
We have a varied programme with specialised talks from presenters who live locally or have travelled from all parts of Wales (and England when we can afford their petrol). The talks cover interesting topics such as travel, landscapes, portraiture, the seashore, macro photography, composite images etc. Most are presenters and judges who have been recommended by The Welsh Photographic Federation (WPF) to which we are affiliated.
Our internal competitions encourage members to photograph many different themes and interpret them in their way. This produces many varied images which we discuss in detail and with pleasure. We have enjoyed many club outings, everyone trying to take the best picture. Which image is the best is very debatable?
We have many talented members who give up their time to organise a series of courses on Photoshop, Elements, Lightroom and Affinity. Also, practical lighting techniques for portraiture. All have been excellent and of a high standard.
New Quay Camera Club has close contact with Cardigan, Aberystwyth, Carmarthen and Tenby Camera Clubs with whom we have "friendly” print and PDI battles.
Members have had photographs accepted for the annual Welsh Salon Exhibitions (WPF), The Photographic Alliance of Great Britain Exhibitions (PAGB) and many International Salon Exhibitions.
Our first exhibition in April 2011 was held in Tabernacle Church Vestry and had 1,128 visitors with sunshine for most of the time. The comment book was full of praise from local people and holiday makers from numerous countries. A resounding success! Our yearly exhibition continues to be successful and enjoyed by all members and the public.
